The Honghua Airport District Masterplan, designed by WoWA Architecture, draws inspiration from traditional Chinese design elements such as courtyards and infuses them with modern concepts like pixel infill. The result is a masterplan that combines consistent design elements with diverse architecture styles, creating a unique and memorable space.
One of the standout features of the masterplan is the "linked activity bar" that runs along the runway park, connecting the north and south areas of the district. At the heart of this bar is the Cirque Du Soleil Anchor, a performance center that activates the runway and the surrounding spaces. The district also features independent courtyards that extend from the runway, providing a sense of openness and tranquility.
To break down the scale of the buildings and add visual interest, the building massing is articulated into smaller stacked boxes, each with its own unique facade design. The use of LED glass canopies and "ball" surfaces adds an element of animation, creating a dynamic light show that encourages street-level events and social interactions.
WoWA Architecture utilizes a parametric design tool to bring the masterplan to life. This tool aids in massing studies, facade pattern control, and landscape design, allowing for a balance between scientific analysis and aesthetic preferences. The result is a design that seamlessly integrates wood, stone, metal, concrete, steel, dirt, plants, and art installations throughout the district.
The Honghua Airport District Masterplan is located in Nanjing, China, and is set to be completed within the next 2-3 years. The design team conducted extensive research on function, urban space, and projects with similar scales to ensure the project's success. The district aims to become a destination in Nanjing, offering a wide range of activities, art installations, and urban spaces that promote a healthy and happy lifestyle for its residents and visitors.
This innovative masterplan has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2021. WoWA Architecture's design showcases their technical and creative skills, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology to improve the quality of life and make the world a better place.
